From the New York Times, February 23, 1982:

POT LIQUOR OR POTLIKKER?

In an article on Senate debates on food that ran on this page Feb. 10, mention was made of a 1935 filibuster in which Huey Long lectured his colleagues on the merits of potlikker. Due to an unfortunate consultation with a dictionary, that great Southern delicacy was referred to as ''pot liquor,'' prompting the following communication from a regional authority on the subject:

Dear Sir:

I always thought The New York Times knew everything, but obviously your editor knows as little about spelling as he or she does about Appalachian cooking and soul food.

Only a culinarily-illiterate damnyankee (one word) who can't tell the difference between beans and greens would call the liquid left in the pot after cooking greens ''pot liquor'' (two words) instead of ''potlikker'' (one word) as yours did. And don't cite Webster as a defense because he didn't know any better either.''

ZELL MILLER

Random acts of Polish [10 Dec 2008|03:29am]
[ mood | tired ]

219 days till Otakon

So I named my World of Warcraft character (Katowice, lv. 23 mage) after a large city in Poland. I didn't think people would notice, but now, near the end of my 10-day trial period, I've already had two people call me on it.

The first, near the beginning of the week, was a bona fide Polish person from Poland, who initially tried talking to me in Polish ("Byłam w Katowice") but switched to stilted English after I responded that I didn't actually know Polish, partly by using the grotesque Spanish-French chimera "no habla polonais", which I'm sure must have confused the living heck out of them at first. Also they mentioned something along the lines of "ha ha it is very industrial town".

The second, just now, was a presumably American player:

[person] whispers: your name is the name of a town in Poland my family is from
me: haha yeah i went through a list of polish cities to name my toon
[person] whispers: just coincidence, but thanks for using the name

Kind of interesting, the sorts of things that can brighten the days of random people.

If you've ever bought anything from the Woot family of sites before, I'd appreciate it a great deal if you could log in and pop in a vote for the Giant Squid vs. Jet Fighter T-shirt design. I didn't design it or anything, but it's one of the funniest T-shirt designs I've ever seen and it would mean a lot to me if you could help it get printed.

Thank you.

Breakfast excursion [13 Oct 2008|09:38am]

277 days till Otakon

So today I decided I'd check out the West Side Market, which is an easy 15-minute train ride from my building. I figured I could pick up something quirky and fresh and then eat it and then head back.

When I got inside around 7:40am, though the posted opening time was 7am, things were pretty much dead. The building itself was quite grand, but maybe 10% of the booths had their lights on, and maybe half of those had people in them, and none of them were 'open' in the traditional sense; they were still carting things in for the most part. Pretty quiet.

On the side of the market building, there's a small diner type place, improbably named the West Side Market Café. This would have to be the place where I would get my breakfast.

I pulled up a chair at the copper-top bar and ordered a "Benedict Arnold" (two halves of toasted english muffin with Canadian bacon, grilled tomato, poached egg, avocado slices, topped with Hollandaise sauce and with a side of hash brown potatoes (containing onion)) and a cup of fresh squeezed orange juice. All the food was super delicious, since just about everything but the salt and pepper was sourced from the farmers/producers/vendors that set up shop elsewhere in the building for four days a week. (Seriously, that orange juice was some of the best I've had in a long time; pulpy and sweet, not throat-burningly caustic like the lower grade from-concentrate stuff.)

The waitress was kind enough to inform me that the market tends to get to a slow start on Mondays, and that Saturdays are "like a madhouse"; if I wanted to come see the real market action I should come then. (I'd even go just for the orange juice.)

Otakon staff meeting today; I'm not there. =( For those of you that are there right now, did they choose a theme yet? I've got to start thinking of cornball program book cover art ideas. =D

Today's laundry day, and as I was folding my shirts by the window I wondered if anyone had ever thought to make soaps or fabric softeners in "Autumn Fresh" scent.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cher_effect

This is one of those things that you've probably been aware of on a conceptual basis for a long time now, but didn't know had a name. It's that 'techno voice' effect used by Cher in her 1998 hit "Believe", which has since been exploited by bunches of other musicians, such as Daft Punk. Click on the "Auto-Tune" link in the article to learn about the digital pitch-correcting processing system that was (ab)used to create this effect.

Excellence in flight [26 Aug 2008|01:45pm]

Today I looked inside a campus recycling bin on the main quad and saw only a small piece of paper at the bottom.

I quickly realized (because I've seen a lot of different kinds of boarding passes before) that it was a Korean Air boarding pass, and so I picked it up. It wasn't terribly damaged, maybe a tiny bit stained, but the vast majority of the paper was nice and crisp.

The faded thermal printing showed that it was for a flight from Seoul to London, on January 10 of this year.

I wonder how it got there.
